A Chance to the Forest

MIGHTY FORESTS

Forests… Many have fallen to greed and only a few real ones stand in their full glory; spreading their knotted arms to the Sun and bewitching people with their smell of indescribable beauty.

Forests are providing us with plenty of resources and oxygen, so without them there is no life. Every tree offers a home to about a dozen of species that would disappear without it. 

Forests help us. But, what do we do in return? 

We destroy and burn them! 

Every time a forest disappears, hundreds of species disappear too. 

Still, there are some solutions. 

It would be a good idea to plant a new tree on the place of the one that was cut down. In this way, forests could be restored. 

We could also create new forests by planting the artificially prepared seeds that grow faster. Then, we would never have to worry about the lack of oxygen or resources. 

Finally, consider this. In every fairy tale there is a forest. So, where would the wolf live without its home? Where would the seven dwarfs live? What would happen to the elfish castles? What would happen to the witches’ home? And, in the end, how would it be possible for any kind of life to exist without the forests? 

We must take action now, before it becomes too late!

FORESTS

There’s a little village on a magical field where every morning butterflies spread there wings and happily fly over the trees towards the sun showing off their beautiful summer colors. Around it there is a forest that helps the field to cool down the during the hot summer days. The forest looks like a magical home for fairies and elves from a fairy tales we all used to read when we were little. There are old trees which rise up high in the sky and with a little help from hot summer breeze look as if they are dancing to a song that little crickets make from their hideout in the grass.

At noon animals come out of their homes and take a relaxing bath in a small forest stream and tiny insects relax on the rocks heated by the sun. In the evening, the whole forest prepares to go to sleep and the sun shines one last time for the day while it goes under the horizon.

St Patrick's Day

There is a famous phrase, ‘Everyone wants to be Irish on St Patrick's Day.’ But, what does it mean? 

St Patrick's Day is a national holiday for the Irish. It is celebrated on 17 March, the day when St Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland, died. 

St Patrick's Day is celebrated with some traditional music, meals (Irish bacon, corned beef and cabbage), Irish sporting events, street parades and plenty of drinks. People drink typical green beer then. In fact, everything is themed around green – shamrocks (St Patrick explained the Holy Trinity by using the shamrock), snakes (St Patrick drove the snakes from Ireland) and leprechauns with green hats and pots of gold (purely American invention). People traditionally wear a small bunch of shamrocks on their jackets or caps, children wear orange, white and green badges (the colours of Irish flag) and women and girls wear green ribbons in their hair. 

No St Patrick’s Day can be imagined without silly jokes, riddles and blessings. Here are a few popular ones: 

What do you get when two leprechauns have a conversation? 

- A lot of small talk. 

Why did St Patrick drive all the snakes out of Ireland? 

- It was too far for them to crawl. 

Why would you never iron a four-leaf clover? 

- Because you shouldn’t press your luck. 

Why do people wear shamrocks on St Patrick’s Day? 

- Real rocks are too heavy! 

Where can gold always be found? 

- In the dictionary. 

To sum up, St Patrick's Day is a time for fun and good laughter! So, why not be Irish on 17 March?

Prince of Persia

Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time is an action adventure film written by Jordan Mechner, Boaz Yakin, Doug Miro and Carlo Bernard, produced by Jerry Bruckheimer and directed by Mike Newell. The film is a remake of a 2003 video game of the same name. The film was released in 2010.

Prince of Persia is a film about an orphan, Dastan (Jake Gyllenhaal) who is adopted by a king of the Persian Empire. With his royal-blooded brothers, Tus (Richard Coyle) and Garsiv (Toby Kebbell) and his uncle Nizam (Ben Kingsley) he attacks the sacred city of Alamut where he meets the beautiful Alamut Princess Tamina (Gemma Arterton). After a fight Prince Dastan gets hold of a dagger. That night he unknowingly presents his father, the King of Persia, with a poisonous robe and the king dies upon trying it on. Dastan is blamed for the King’s murder and he is forced to escape with Tamina. At their first stop, Tamina tries to kill Dastan and recover the dagger. During that stop Dastan finds out that the dagger can reverse time. What will happen to them? 

Prince of Persia is a very exciting film for the whole family. Don’t miss it!

Bonfire Night, also known as Guy Fawkes Day, is celebrated in the UK every year on 5 November. On this day people remember the failure of Guy Fawkes and twelve other conspirators to blow up the Houses of Parliament in London in 1605.

Celebrations take place in every city, town or village, with bonfires, fireworks and various foods (meat and potato stew served with red cabbage, jacket potatoes and treacle toffee). 

In the past, children would make a ‘guy’ (life-size dummy) from old clothes stuffed with newspaper and take it around the streets, asking for ‘a penny for the guy’. They then used most of the money to buy fireworks or sweets.

Dear Mac, 

Greetings from the beautiful island of Hawaii. This is the most wonderful place ever, and I’m having a great time. I just got here yesterday and I have already taken surfing lessons, tried some local dishes and got a bad case of sunburn when I was enjoying my lunch at the beach. Now I look like a pepper, but because of the sunburn I haven’t climbed the volcano. Tonight we’re going to sit by the campfire telling stories and making smokes.

Dear Jovan, 

Greetings from Egypt! I’m sorry I haven’t written you before, but I’ve been on holidays. So I’m writing from Cairo, the capital city of Egypt to let you know how I’m getting on. 

It’s hot and sunny and I’m having a fantastic time. I’m staying at a big hotel at the city centre. I’ve been here since Friday and I’ve already done lots of interesting things. 

Last Monday I went to Giza. I saw the Great Pyramids and Sphinx. The view from up close was breathtaking! On Thursday I took a boat trip down the Nile. It was great. I’ve taken lots of photos so far. On Saturday I came back to Giza and climbed on top of Cheops’s pyramid. 

I’ve also been shopping at the stores and big markets in the centre and bought a lot of little pyramids and sphinxes. 

We’re coming back next Sunday, so I’ll see you then.

The Call of the Wild

The Call of the Wild is a story about a dog Buck and his path to the Wild. The writer of this amazing and incredible story is Jack London. 

Buck was born in Mr. Miller’s house. It was a big house with large gardens and fields of fruit trees around it. In this big place there were house dogs and farm dogs, but they weren’t important. Buck was the chief dog, he was born there, he lived there and that was his place. 

One day Manuel, a man who worked for Mr. Miller, tied a piece of rope around Buck’s neck. Buck thought that this was just a walk. He didn’t know that this was 1897 and he didn’t know that men and big dogs were hurrying to north-west Canada to look for gold. Manuel gave the rope to a man and this man gave Manuel some money in exchange. That is how Buck was sold and his new path began. 

The next day, when he woke up he was in a small box. A man opened the box and tied a piece of rope around Buck’s neck. The rope was pulled and Buck had to go. That man sold Buck to the barmen in a bar. The barmen sold him further to the men called Perault and François. Buck learned that they were fair men. He was in harness with other either dogs and they were pulling goods. That was their job. At first, Buck felt embarrassed. He saw horses pulling harness and because of that he felt like a horse. Buck learned quickly how to pull harness, how to dig a hole for a sleep and what was most important he learned a law of club and tooth: “Always obey your master”. In harness big dogs were chiefs. In his harness Buck was the one who was the big dog, so he was a chief. Little by little and Perault and François put him for a lead dog of harness. He was a good chief. He made his team work hard and they were always moving quickly. They pulled from Seattle to Dawson City for a couple of times. 

Slowly they were getting tired, but they didn’t have any rest. What was once a fast harness became a slow one - tired and useless. Dogs were skin and bone. 

Dogs in harness were sold to Americans, called Hal and Charles. They didn’t know anything about harness and while doing that job, they were bad drivers. One day they had to cross the White River. A man called John Thornton said to Hal that it wasn’t safe to do that, but Hal didn’t listen. Buck sensed trouble and because of that he didn’t want to move. The stupid Hal and Charles let Buck go to Thornton and tried to cross the river. At one moment they fell in cold water. 

Buck and Thornton were best friends. Buck helped Thornton and saved his life many times. They were having a great time until the Indians killed Thornton and friends. After that Buck joined the wolves and become the chief of his wolf pack. 

The Call of the Wild is an amazing story. I like it because it’s full of action and description of the wilderness. In this story we see that each dog still has a part of his ancestors deep down - the wolves.

A fashion magazine

Today’s fashion is different than before. It has changed a lot in the course of time. In the 18th century the French court at Versailles was the centre of the fashion world. Women’s dresses became wider. By the 1740s fashionable dresses measured more than two metres across. Women had hairstyles with decorations like flowers and fruit. In 1770s fashionable British men copied Italian style.

After the First World War, fashion became more relaxed and more comfortable than before. Women started wearing simple comfortable clothes. They had short hair and began wearing skirts above the ankle. Male fashion also became less formal. Wealthy men began wearing suits. Clothes became colourful and casual. 

Today’s fashion is much more interesting, though. Nowadays, people wear colourful and fashionable clothes. 

Women like wearing jeans, tops, skirts, tracksuits, and lots of other stuff. Men wear jeans, shirts, sweatshirts, tracksuits but businessmen wear suits and ties.

Teenagers wear the most fashionable clothes. Girls wear interesting tops, tight jeans, skirts and tracksuits. Sunglasses are very popular just as tattoos and earrings. 

I like wearing fashionable clothes. I usually wear tracksuits because I think that they are the most comfortable. I like wearing dresses too, but only in the summer and on special occasions. In my opinion, fashion is important because it describes our personality and character.

Gimme Shelter

Gimme Shelter is a movie about one of my favourite bands The Rolling Stones and their concert tour in 1969. That tour was their first tour after a long break. 

The first frames of the film show the drummer Charlie Watts and the singer Mick Jagger. Then the cameras move to New York. The Stones play a brilliant version of the big hit “Jumping Jack Flash”. Then they have a concert in San Francisco. There are more than 300 000 young people there. Everybody tries to look happy and have a good fun but a fight arises. The “order” is maintained by a security group which is in fact a gang called Hell’s Angles. The Stones play their famous songs “Under My Thumb”, “Satisfaction”, and so on but the people keep fighting. Mick tells people to calm down but there is no police to maintain the real order. Hell’s Angels are actually gangsters who beat everyone up. Suddenly, a young man walks up on the stage with a gun in his hands. A few seconds later Hell’s Angles surround the young man and start punching him. One of them stabs the man in the neck with a knife and he dies. When the Stones play their last song, men and girls cry. It is a very sad scene…

I like this documentary because it is about rock ’n’ roll and because it shows how concerts can end disastrously if the security isn’t on a level it should be on. It is also about one of my favourite stars- the Rolling Stones.

A trip to remember

Participating in swimming competitions, I had a chance to visit the Czech Republic, the country in Central Europe with the population of about ten million people. The capital is Prague with over one million people. 

The Czech Republic is a beautiful country. I visited it in spring and everything was even more beautiful. The highway passes through mountain area and cuts several rivers. Along the road there are wind turbines that produce electricity. This is the first sign that the Czech Republic is a developed country. 

My goal was Brno, the town in South Moravian region. I was staying in the Hotel Slavia. The Czechs I met there were very kind. That weekend was the Museum night and the streets were full of people. On squares there were some stages with different types of music. I visited many churches from the 13th and 14th centuries. I had dinner in a nice restaurant and went to bed. 

The next morning I had a successful competition. After lunch I visited the famous Castle Špilberk. For over seven centuries, it has dominated the skyline of Brno. In the course of history the Castle provided safety and protection to the citizens. During the Austro - Hungarian monarchy, the Castle was turned into a notorious prison. Its dark catacombs show how cruel the prison was. It is still cold, dark and frightening in those catacombs. Now, this Castle is a beautiful museum. From one of the windows of the castle you can see the whole city. 

North of the city I visited the cave Bull Rock. It is placed in a big rock. In the evening I ate out with my host. A kind waiter welcomed and wished us a pleasant evening. Quiet music was heard in the restaurant. During the dinner famous Czech beer was mentioned. I took a bottle, looked at it and it was my experience with beer. I will taste it some other time, probably in several years. 

The following morning I went for a short walk. I saw old buildings, the culture of many centuries ago, but I saw contemporary stuff too. There are no cars in the city centre, just quiet and clean trams. After the walk I had lunch and went home. 

That was a nice weekend in the Czech Republic. I would like to visit the Czech Republic again, and I would recommend you to visit it too because it is beautiful.

The Librarian: Quest for the Spear

The Librarian: Quest for the Spear by Dean Devlin and Peter Winhter is one of the best films ever. The stars are Noah Wyle, Kyle McLachlan, Kelly Hu, Olympia Dukakis, Jane Curtin and Bob Newhart. It’s rated PG so you need a parent’s permission if you want to watch this film. It is a kind of an adventure-action film.

The film is about a Spear that supposedly pierced the Christ on the Cross. The last Librarian dismantled the Spear into three parts. Now the new Librarian Flynn must find and blend all the three parts together again. The Spear has got a great power and if it falls into wrong hands… well, that isn’t good because the man or the woman who has it can rule both life and death.

The main characters in this film are Flynn, the Librarian, his protector Nicole Noone and Judson, the man who owns The Metropolitan Public Library.

The plot is set in the Metropolitan Public Library, in the Amazon Forest, in an old Mayan Temple, on the mountain Himalayas, in Shangri La and in the Museum of the World History where the old Egyptian Great Pyramid is.

The Snakes brotherhood take one part of the Spear from the Judson’s Library and the new Librarian Flynn finds the second part of the Spear in the Amazon Forest, in the old Mayan temple. The Snakes brotherhood catches Flynn and Nicole and takes the second part of the Spear away from them. Then they go to the Himalayas where they find a mystery of Asia: the Shangri La and the temple where the last and the third part of the Spear are. Now when the Snakes have all three parts of the Spear they go to the museum of the World History and there they get into the Great Pyramid where all the three parts of the Spear finally blend after three hundred years. The Snakes have the power but the Librarian Flynn stops their brotherhood and brings the Spear back into the library.

I love this film because my favourite types of films are adventure and action films where you can always find adventurous events and mystery.

Christmas

Christmas is one of the happiest times of the year. In English-speaking countries, children sing special Christmas songs called carols, at schools they dress up in costumes and perform a nativity play (the story of Jesus’ birth in the stable); everything is decorated with evergreens, symbols of lasting life. This magical season brings families and friends together. 

The Christmas season is celebrated twelve days, but the most important days are Christmas Eve on 24 December, Christmas Day on 25 December and Boxing Day on 26 December.

The start of the Christmas season is called Advent. It begins four Sundays before Christmas. Thanks to Advent calendars children can count the days to Christmas. Advent calendars are posters or cards with twenty-four small doors, one to be opened each day from 1 December until Christmas Eve. Behind each door there is a picture or a chocolate. 

Children hang up their stockings on Christmas Eve. They write letters to Father Christmas, but do not send them. Instead, they throw them in the fire, and if letters fly up the chimney, the children will find the desired gift in their stockings or under the Christmas tree on Boxing Day. The name Boxing Day comes from the custom of opening church money boxes on that day. The money was for poor people. 

On Christmas Day, the whole family gathers at midday to have a big Christmas dinner. Traditional foods are: turkey, Christmas cake, Christmas pudding and mince pies. 

Traditionally, when you find a bone of the turkey in the shape of the letter ‘y’, also called a wishbone, you ask another person to hold its end and pull. The person left with the larger piece of the bone makes a wish. 

As for the pudding, each person in the family should help mix it, because this brings good luck. People sometimes hide a silver coin inside. 

Today, mince pies are round and full of sweet, dry fruit. But, not long ago, they were of different shapes and filled with real meat. It is said that if you eat 12 mince pies in 12 different houses during the 12 days of Christmas, you will have happy 12 months in the coming year. 

No Christmas meal or party is complete without Christmas crackers (brightly coloured paper tubes, twisted at both ends). When the crackers are pulled, a colourful party crown, a toy or a gift, and a joke falls out. 

And here are a few Christmas jokes: 

- What’s white and goes up? 

- A confused snowflake. 

- What goes ‘oh, oh, oh’? 

- Santa walking backwards! 

- What goes, ‘Now you see me, now you don’t’? 

- A snowman on a zebra crossing! 

The Christmas season ends on 6 January, on the Twelfth Night, when people take down decorations.

Thanksgiving Day is a family holiday celebrated in the USA every fourth Thursday in November.

A typical Thanksgiving meal is: roasted turkey, mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce, stuffing, sweet corn and pumpkin pie.

At Thanksgiving American families watch street parades or football games on TV.

Interesting facts:

Thanksgiving Day was first celebrated by the Pilgrims, a group of Puritans who landed at Plymouth Rock, in what is now Massachusetts, United States, in 1620.

William Bradford, Governor of New England, proclaimed a day of “thanksgiving” and prayer to celebrate the Pilgrims’ first harvest in America, in1621.

Abraham Lincoln, United States president designated a national Thanksgiving Day in 1863.

Hallowe'en

Hallowe’en is a holiday for children celebrated on 31 October. It means ‘holy evening.’ 

Every Hallowe’en children put on some scary masks and costumes of a witch, ghost, vampire, werewolf, Dracula, or Frankenstein. Then they go from house to house and say magic words, TRICK OR TREAT, MONEY OR EAT. People give them a treat, such as sweets, chocolate, biscuits, fruit or pumpkin pie. If they don’t, the children play a trick on them, like throwing flour or toilet paper on their houses.

Children also cut faces in pumpkins and put candles inside. These lamps are called Jack o’ lanterns. They are usually put in the windows. 

A lot of children go to Hallowe’en parties, where they play a game called Apple Bobbing. They fill a large bowl with water and put some apples inside. One or two players get down on their knees and try to bite an apple with their hands behind their back.

NOTTING HILL CARNIVAL

Every year, at the last weekend of August, people have the Notting Hill Carnival in London. It is probably the biggest street party in Europe. Then, people dress up in beautiful costumes, dance to the sound of a lot of different kinds of music and eat Caribbean food. 

The festival started in the 1960s as a celebration of Caribbean culture in London.

My Pet by Milica Keneški, IV3 

My pet is a dog. Her name is Dona. 

When she came, she was six weeks old. Now, she is eighteen months old. 

She is a big dog. Her fur is black and white. She has a long tail and ears, but her eyes are little and sad. Her teeth are big and sharp. She has four long legs. 

Dona eats meat and vegetables too. Her favourite food is milk and bones. She can run and jump well. She likes playing with a ball. 

I love my pet Dona. She is a great dog! 

Friends

Almost everyone has got many friends, but just few friends are the best. They help you in trouble, laugh with you and spend time with you.

I’ve got three best friends. They are Ivana, Dijana and Smiljana. This time I’ll describe Ivana.

Ivana is a tall, fourteen-year-old girl, who lives in Kikinda and is in the same class with me. She has got straight, brown hair and brown eyes. When she read, she wears glasses. She is a pretty, friendly and gorgeous girl who has a younger sister. 

In her free time, Ivana likes listening to music (pop, rock and r’n’b), going rollerblading, sleeping or hanging out with her best friends. She also likes going shopping or to a café with us.

Ivana’s favourite colours are red and black, and she would like to have a tattoo. 

When she grows up she wants to be a psychologist or a translator.

Ivana is very direct and sincere. She likes helping people – when I need some help, she is there for me. She is very friendly and likes making new friend. But she is very stubborn and panicky. When she has a test, especially Maths test, she gets into a panic, a lot, and then she makes a lot of stupid mistakes.

Ivana likes sport, too. She used to play volleyball and tennis, and do karate, but not anymore. 

Ivana is my best friend, because she is great, loves having a lot of fun and laughing and she always tells me what she thinks. It is beautiful to have a friend like her, because she is always there when I need her. 

Everyone should have friends like Dijana, Ivana and Smiljana, because they are really the best friends for life.

When I finish school

It’s daytime. I’m sitting on a school chair thinking about my future. It’s so complicated.

I haven’t got anything on my mind. I’m not living in the future. Everything I care about is today. My friends are thinking about some life abroad. They want to be film stars, singers, players, but I don’t care. Maybe I want to become a basketball player, but it’s just a dream. 

Now, when I look at them, they all look the same, ordinary kids, but maybe some of them will be who knows what. This life and all is stupid to me. 

When I finish school, start to work and meet some girl, I hope everything will be different.

My name is Andrea. I’m twelve. I’ve got one brother. His name is Adrian and he’s eight. I like to play with him and we like to play with our pet Solea. She’s a dog. When I get back from school, we go outside to take a walk with her, or take her to the park to play with her. 

My parents’ names are Atila and Elvira. My dad has got a photography store in our house. My mum’s a hairstylist. 

I’ve got two uncles and two aunts. Uncle Petar is my Dad’s older brother. His wife’s name is Anica. They haven’t got any children. My aunt Aranka is my mum’s older sister. She’s married. Her husband’s name is Dragiša. They’ve got a daughter- her name is Aleksandra, and a son- his name is Dejan. I like them but I don’s see them very often because they live on the other side of the town.

My mother’s parents are Marija and Ištvan. I see them often. I like them very much. Then there are my dad’s parents – Miljana and Šandor. He died when I was two. But my grandma Miljana lives with us. She always buys me something. I like her. 

So, that’s my family.

Hi! 

I’m the eldest child in my family. I have one younger brother. His name is Igor and he’s seven years old. 

My parents’ names are Danica and Predrag. My mum’s thirty-five and my dad is thirty-nine. My dad works in a factory “Naftagas” and my mum works in a bank.

My aunt, Marija, is mum’s older sister. Her husband’s name is Siniša and he’s my uncle. They have two children: Slobodan (Boba) and Vladimir (Vlada). Boba is older and he’s fourteen. Vlada is one year younger than me. He’s eleven and he goes in school with. 

My other aunt, Vesna, is forty-three, but her husband is forty-two. They have one daughter: Željka, and one son: Matija. Željka is the same age as me and Matija is five. 

I have two living grandparents. One’s dad’s mum and the other is mum’s dad. My grandpa now has got another wife, but my grandma is single. She lives with us. 

So, that’s all. That’s my family.

My Pet by Boris Škapik, VIII2

I love animals, especially cats. I have three cats, but I am going to write about the youngest and smartest of them, named Pićuka. 

When I was coming home from school one day, I saw a small cat in trouble. It was being chased by a dog. I quickly grabbed it and saved it. It was so frightened.

At home, my family and I agreed to call it Pićuka, because it is funny.

Pićuka is a male. He has large, green eyes and a small head. His fur is black and white. 

Remember whan I said that he was the smartest cat? I am going to explain you why I think so. He jumps on a handle and opens the door, so, thanks to him, all the cats get in. Whenever he is thirsty, he goes to the bathroom and when we hear, ’Miaow, miaow,’ we know that we have to give him water.

Sometimes, he is not so smart. When my grandmother is in the kitchen he goes round her legs... Many times I have seen Pićuka fly. My grandmother helps him to fly with her leg or with a broom. 

Pićuka is not just my pet. He is my friend, too. I know that he has a perfect life... if we count out my grandmother.

My future and the future of the world 

In the future many things will change. My life and the life of the whole world, and who knows what else will change!? 

When I’m older, I’ll probably live in a big city. I like big cities because they have lots of schools, hotels, beautiful parks, supermarkets… But most of all, I like skyscrapers! I want to work in a big office. I want to be an architect because many architects are rich and famous people, and because I like to imagine what a certain building will look like. When I become an architect, all my inventions will be transferred on paper. Many architects project buildings in Dubai. Sheiks give them a lot of money for their many months’ work! 

I think that in the future we will find intelligent life on other planets. When we find it we will establish trade routes with the aliens! And then, when we and the aliens become good friends, they will tell us more about their life in space and their technology. After that we will make super-modern spaceships (destroyers) and then we will occupy the whole galaxy and even more than that! The capital system will be Solar system and the capital planet will be the Earth! Life on the Earth will change like the life of the whole galaxy. There will be sky cars and many skyscrapers on the Earth! Children won’t go to school- they will have their own robot-teachers! 

And the whole story about such future of the world may someday happen!

My Future 

Future life is a mistery for all of us. We have great expectations. What will tomorrow look like? So many questions. What are my wishes for the future? That, I can answer. 

I would like to have a nice life full of peace, love, understanding... 

Imagine a time machine and imagine that we are in the year 2024 now. After high scool, I finished faculty. Now I have a nice job which brings me a lot of money. Also, I have a nice house in a quiet part of the town. There is a swimming pool in the backyard, a new family car is in the garage. I live with my beautiful wife and two children, a boy and a girl. We are a small family full of love. At weekends, we like to go to picnics or fishing. Usually, every Sunday afternoon we visit our parents. I am trying to teach my kids how important family is. It is all about love, respect, loyalty, support and tradition. 

On vacations, we go to the mountains. We have a small house there. Fresh air, green trees and clean water from the lake make us all very happy. It is so different than the city where we live. 

What about the situation in the world? That is the best part! Finally, there is peace on earth. People have learnt how to live together. We have learnt to accept and respect differences. 

Is my dream science fiction? I hope not. It is easy. We need just a little bit of goodwill.

The Dead of Jericho (book review)

The name of the book that I have recently read is ’The Dead of Jericho.’ It is a murder mystery, written by Colin Dexter, which takes place in the old part of Oxford - Jericho.

When Chief Inspector Morse met a beautiful woman called Anne Scott, he did not know that she would hang herself only six months later.

He hears about the sad news and investigates it, even if it is not his case. He finds out a lot of things – that there were no curtains upstairs, that the front door was unlocked... He interviews most of Anne’s neighbours and the city’s blacksmith. He manages to get the key from Anne’s back door.

One night he gets into the house and notices a lot of details. When he finishes investigating, he goes out of the house, over the garden wall and then he gets caught. He is pushed into a police car. The man who catches him is Constable Walters, the helper of Chief Inspector Bell, in charge of the case. They drive to Morse’s home and exchange information.

The next day, while Morse is on the Summertown Bridge Club talk, given by Charles Richards, the second murder happens in Jericho. It is Anne’s neighbour, George Jackson, who gets killed.

Morse is puzzled, but the Assistant Chief Commissioner wants him in charge of the case. Morse takes the case and exchanges information with Bell once again.

In the next few days, he finds out about a blackmail, some letters and a lot of other details. In the end, he catches the murderers – Charles and Conrad Richards, Anne’s lover and his brother.

The characters of this story are Morse and Lewis, his Sergeant, Charles and Conrad Richards, Charles’s wife Celia, some members of the Bridge Club, the Murdoch family...

The main character is Chief Inspector Morse. He is intelligent, but he has three flaws: beer, Mozart and women. He is very much like an ordinary person, not like an inspector. That is what makes him so special.

I liked this book very much. It is interesting and exciting, but sometimes it can be scary and that is what I like.

My favourite kinds of entertainment

There are lots of types of entertainment. One of them is watching TV. Do you know how many kinds of TV programmes there are? There are quiz shows, such as “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?”, soap operas, cartoons such as “Disney’s Aladdin”, dramas, police series, such as “CSI” or “Inspector Rex”, comedy programmes, documentaries, news programmes (how I hate news but I have to write something about them!), such as CNN News.

There are also many types of films. I love watching films and what about you? Do you like films?

Well, anyway, there are comedy films, such as “The Adams Family” – they’re my favourites, and then, there are adventure films, such as “Archangel”, horror films, such as “Pulse” or “Resident Evil” and many, many more. There are sci-fi films, such as “Alien vs. Predator” or “Star Wars” and let’s not forget musicals (I hate musicals and I’ve never watched one in my whole life!). I don’t know any musicals but I know a lot of cartoons, such as “Naruto” or “Yu-Gi-Oh” or many others (I can’t think of more cartoons at the moment).

Then there are books. Who likes reading books? Well, I don’t! If I read anything, I read comics. My favourite comic is “Alan Ford”. Have you got a favourite comic, if you read them?

Magazines! How could I forget them?! My favourite magazine is a games catalogue “Screen Fun”. If you read magazines, which ones are your favourites?

Music! It went out of my mind completely! I hope you all know the types of music or do I have to tell you? I’ll tell you anyway so we can be sure that everyone knows them. There are rock, hard rock, metal, heavy metal (where the only thing the singer does is sreaming!), pop, techno, rap, punk and many more. I think that “Lordi”, “Toy Dolls”, “The Beatles”, “AC- DC” and “Nazareth” are the coolest bands.
